Popcorn tree

This one is for MAX...

"I looked out the window,
and what did I see...

Popcorn popping on the apricot tree!

Spring has brought me such a nice surprise,

Popcorn popping, right before my eyes!

I can take an armful and make a treat,
A popcorn ball that smells so sweet...

I know it isn't so,
but it seems to me...

Popcorn's popping on the apricot tree!"

(If you squinch up your eyes, they really do look like popcorn balls... it was almost dark, I grabbed my camera and ran to the neighbors before the storm broke and knocked all the blossoms off - that's my excuse for the fuzzy photo. But like I said - squinch your eyes...)

Yah, I know, it isn't an apricot tree. I do the best I can with these bursts of inspiration.

PS My computer's back on line - again. Hopefully for good this time.

"God is in the details."

It was difficult to choose just a few photos to share out of the 52 snapshots I was blessed to record. Oregon coast travelers may recognize this scene just south of Cannon Beach - a wonderful viewing point, especially when serendipity struck during a stomy roundtrip to Astoria.

These are some of the reasons Mr. Kodak invented his camera.
The quote? Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Awesome Rawsome Potluck!

For the complete scoop, along with photos to drool over, click on over to Avocado, Meet Zuchinni (the link is in the sidebar of my Friends and Family blogs).

The Mighty Ducks (of Main Street, that is)

According to my brother, at a recent city council meeting, the subject of the ducks who have taken over Main Street arose.

The four ducks have been staking out their territory since about mid-January. They range from the corner of 5th and Main to 1st and Main, from Ocean St. to the city park on Trade St. The pair of Mallards and the pair of Pekins are totally oblivious to traffic, dog walkers, hovering hawks, and small children who want to pet them.

They enter any yard with impunity. And they expect recompense for the priviledge of their company. Preferable, bread. And none of the sticky white stuff, thank you very much, it's whole wheat or nothing.

They know our vehicle. When I come around the corner, if they happen to be within the block, they beat me to the porch (I have to drive into the garage, unload my stuff, and close the garage door - I AM faster than a danged duck, I'm just a little handicapped).

Once at the door, they don't leave until they receive their snack. Four slices of bread. Two won't do it.

Upon eating the offering of the hour (this happens several times a day...), they have no compunction about cutting the conversation short (yes, we talk to them, being proficient in "Mallard" and other ducky dialects), and waddling off to their next appointment.

But first they wet their whistle in the ditch across the street - a veritable duck paradise, running water and green grass!

Many a time, we have watched perplexed but somewhat amused drivers stop for the flat-footed invaders, letting them cross the street at their leisure. The really funny incidents happen when one duck gets too far in front, and stops in the middle of the road for the rest to catch up. As I said, they ignore cars. Mom even trundled up the road to scoot them across one day, as a very patient driver waited - and waited - and waited - for their royal highnesses to complete the voyage from one side of the street to the other.

At other times, it's amazing how quickly those flat feet can cover ground - such as when they hear the garage door going up...

Surprisingly, they are seldom found at the park, despite the inviting creek. My theory is, the kids at the park are too busy at the skate board ramps to bother with packing a loaf of bread around for a bunch of pesky ducks.

So far, the city council remains as oblivious to the duck dramas as it does to other city issues that the property owners would like to have addressed.

Such as - just who do those crazy ducks belong to, and who would have to assume liability if one gets hit by a car and wipes out a hubcap??

I just hope no one has noticed how much time the ducks spend at 5545 Main St......they might get the wrong idea....

Exotic designing

Rather closely grown trees, to produce rings like this... my Master Gardening classmates would be stumped, for sure. (how do those puns slip in so sneakily?)

Bamboo parquet is highly prized...I really like my bamboo knitting needles, too.

Full disclosure forthcoming. Any guesses?

Apologies to Ohio...

Did you see on the news that whopping icicle hanging off the 3-story building in DeMoines, Ohio?? Awesome. But very very cold...

We seem to be having an El Nino pattern spring - warmer and drier than usual. So I'm pushing the envelope. There's only been a few times in my gardening years that I've successfully convinced the early greenies to launch and survive before about mid-April. A worthwhile challenge, short of moving to (gasp) California.

With the help of Guentner's Nursery in Salem (GORGEOUS and impossible-to-pass-by veggie and herb starts), our first covered raised bed looks downright tropical!

I know, it's cheating. The coast nurseries are a few weeks from having starts. But I did put in some seeds, a couple weeks ago. Look closely. (double click on the picture)

Those little green specks in the middle front are PEAS, by gum! And just to the left are some Lancinato kale peeking through, and just this morning I finally welcomed a square of mixed lettuces which got brave enough to make their presence known to the right of the peas. Micro greens, for sure. Worth their weight in gold, this time of year.

The other beds are in process, with peas scheduled to go in the first one in a few days, and spinach, kale, chard and green onions in the middle bed. More lettuces from a starter-flat in the house will be ready to head outdoors before long. Head. That was a pun?
So far, Mom has got to murder only 3 slugs, using the sure-fire scissor method (deadly and non-toxic), at the cost of part of a small lettuce leaf. Now the bait is spread, and we're watching for signs of slimey intruders.
That's the only downside of starting a garden this early. We have to put on our slug patrol hats every morning - but AFTER breakfast. Those scissors - ewwwww.

The Never-ending Story...

I remember a post in Wisconsin Snapshots that covered our family woodgathering and fireplace history. Nothing has changed. Except we now get to use an electric WOODSPLITTER!!!! Sure beats the 'ol wedge and maul technique. A guy could get real spoiled with this dandy little machine.

Chris has a hair-raising tale of getting this particular load of wood - 'pert near lost his pickup down one of those pesky canyons. He not only cut and hauled it out, he stuck around to split it for us. I think he likes running that gizmo...

I think sap runs in her veins...you can't keep her away from the woodpile and chopping block!

Yeah, yeah. I have to do real work from time to time. They won't let me just hang out in the kitchen where I belong.

By gum, she DOES sit down once in awhile. I had to take a picture to prove it. And I do believe that's a glass of water there - maybe this is a BREAK??!!

It didn't last long, let me assure you.
She's a slave driver.
But we do have a nice cozy fire every morning and evening, so I guess I'd better not complain.

Time...

Time passes - but memories linger. Sweet comfort, for those days I need a hug.

Good moorrrrrrrrrrrrning, Ankeny!

You've never seen anyone get as much enjoyment out of one little bird as my sister does. Well - it wasn't exactly a LITTLE bird. Nevertheless.

We took a sunny morning excursion to Ankeny Wildlife Refuge, about 15 minutes from the Farr house - lucky duck, to be that close! The very first thing we saw had Becky doing contortions out the car window with her very fancy and HEAVY camera ... then she eased open the door and took another 2 dozen shots...

and she finally couldn't stand it, hopped out of the car, scurried down the lane, and kept shooting...
at this totally oblivious Eagle. This photo is actually mine, it was hard to get a good angle with SOMEONE else hogging the sweet spots - but we won't name names. ( Besides, she has a better toy...and an artist's eye for the choice shots. And she shares *U*)

If you want to see some truely wonderful photos of our joy-filled morning jaunt, click over to Becky's blog at http://www.bbfarr.blogspot.com/ .

Sometimes you just have to grab a sliver of time and hold on for the ride - it will refresh your heart and soul!
